Jason Alward, President of the Island New Democrats, is pleased to report the success of a COVID-19 modified annual Party meeting held virtually by Zoom Saturday, November 28, 2020. Executive and members adjusted well to this safe, socially distanced AGM.
“All necessary Party business was successfully carried out, including executive reports, resolutions and the election of officers” says President Alward. “I am particularly pleased to report that the Party is now debt free, allowing us to further build grassroot connections throughout the Island”, reports Alward.
Constitutional amendments were approved including extending Party membership to Island newcomers who have Permanent Resident status. “These new Canadians are contributing to our community culturally and economically, but are not permitted to vote or run for office in provincial or federal elections. They will be welcome to join and participate as members of the Island New Democrats” affirms Alward. This initiative, as well as the earlier formation of BIPOC and SOGI committees in June highlights the party’s continued mandate of inclusiveness in electoral democracy.
Joining the Island New Democrats will also be facilitated by validating membership status for two years.
Other important policy resolutions were approved to ensure accessible and affordable housing to Islanders with disabilities, and to advocate for correction of the unfair and divisive EI zone policy imposed on the Island by the federal government in 2014.
Island New Democrats also adopted policies to recognize Party members for volunteerism and Environmental advocacy.
Newly elected of officers include:
Patti de Weever First Vice-President
JoAnne Callaghan Recording Secretary
Sophia Kreuzkamp Membership Secretary
Treasurer Katie McInnis
“We are very pleased with the dedication and talent of our new and re-elected Executive members who will contribute to our future success”, concludes President Jason Alward.
