Hilda Ramsay Student Award Recipient

NDP PEI Women’s Committee chair Susan MacVittie presents a cheque to Hilda Ramsay fund recipient Bethany Keoughan

The NDP PEI Women’s Committee is proud to announce that UPEI student, Bethany Keoughan, is the recipient of the 2020 Hilda Ramsay Student Award.

Bethany is a fourth-year honour student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts, Major in Sociology at UPEI and a mother of two children.

” I am incredibly humbled and honoured to receive the recognition of this award and appreciate the financial help that it will provide me as a full-time student and mother of two toddlers,” says Bethany Keoughan.  “I am looking forward to completing my degree in Sociology next month and allowing my passion for social justice issues guide me into a meaningful career devoted to giving back to my community and ensuring that marginalized voices are elevated in order to create the change that we so desperately need within our society today.”

The annual award of $500 is granted to a female identified student who is pursuing study at UPEI or Holland College. Preference is given to a student in financial need with a demonstrated interest in social justice, women/diversity studies, Indigenous, environmental studies, political studies or the trades.

“Thank you to everyone who applied for the Hilda Ramsay Award,” says Women’s Committee Chair, Susan MacVittie. “We know female-identified students struggle more to pay back student loans due to the gender wage gap. That gap also widens for racialized, immigrant and indigenous women and women with disabilities. I wish we could have helped everyone who applied and I encourage them to apply again next year.”
