(Charlottetown) Island New Democrats have set Saturday, April 2, 2022 for a Leadership Convention at a recent provincial council meeting. “2022 will be an exciting year for Island New Democrats as we make a positive contribution to the political discourse of our Province”, says party president Lori MacKay.
The Leadership vote is slated for the afternoon of April 2, following the morning annual general meeting which will deal with regular party business. The new leader will succeed Joe Byrne who stepped down September 1, 2020. The party president serves as spokesperson between leaders, and Lori MacKay follows Jason Alward in this role since the 2021 annual convention.
President MacKay highlighted the importance for Island New Democrats to have a leader in place during these times for the party to more effectively address major issues facing Islanders such as the COVID-19 pandemic, fallout from the devastating potato wart, the housing crisis, reconciliation with First Nations, and many other concerns of Islanders.
“The new Leader will inherit a debt free organization with a supportive executive and provincial council, as well as enthusiastic party activists”, says Ms. MacKay. “Island New Democrats have a proud history of promoting progressive policies, often leading the way in our province promoting kindergarten, an ombudsperson, a medical faculty at UPEI, and many other initiatives for the benefit of Islanders”, adds the party president.
As per the Island New Democratic Party Constitution, following registration and vetting, leadership candidates must announce their intention to run by March 13, at least 20 days prior to the April 2 convention date.
