On this International Workers’ Day, as we honour the legacy of the workers’ movement, we focus our attention to the essential workers on the front line during these difficult times. The fight to obtain proper wages and benefits for those who can’t say no to work for fear of reprisal must continue. #internationalworkersday #mayday #workersrights #ndp #ndppei ...

There is no reasoning for what transpired in Nova Scotia in the morning of April 19. Yesterday we lost 16 innocent people (to date) to a senseless, random act of violence. It goes without saying that all Islanders’ thoughts are with the people directly affected, and all Nova Scotians.

The community members involved came from all walks of life. Heather O’Brien, a nurse and grand mother, Lisa Mccully, a teacher and mother, and RCMP officer Constable Heidi Stevenson, a 23 year veteran and mother of two. As information continues to evolve we will learn of other names that meant so much to the community of Portapique and its surrounding.

This tragedy, the deadliest in Canadian history, will be a heavy loss for years to come. The names of those people lost will not be forgotten.

Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This day falls on a particularly trying time, and one that highlights the work that still needs to be done.⁣
⁣⁣
⁣Currently, migrant workers and refugees are in a precarious situation, with limited access to healthcare. Black and Indigenous communities are already disproportionately and economically disadvantaged, and will undoubtedly feel increased strain at this time. The Chinese and Asian communities are experiencing unprecedented xenophobia due to the pandemic. ⁣
⁣⁣
⁣As Islanders, we need to come together and make sure our racialized communities receive the proper care and support they need. Help your neighbours, donate to food banks if you can. Be a welcoming home to those who are under severe pressure and anxiety. ⁣
⁣⁣
⁣Educate those who rely on fear based information. Be kind in these trying times and let’s continue our work to eliminate racism. #IDERD

As Islanders face the threat of COVID-19, our usual way of interacting with each other and doing business has drastically changed. Our trusted health authorities wisely advise us to avoid unnecessary contact and adhere to appropriate social distance.

Although our natural instinct is to be close to our friends and neighbours, under these circumstances the best way we can help each other, particularly our seniors and other vulnerable Islanders is to follow the advice of Chief Health Officer, Dr. Heather Morrison and the health authorities.

I want to thank all of our health care personnel for their tireless commitment, care and support during this challenging time.

As Islanders we must, and we will work together to support each other through this difficult time.
