Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This day falls on a particularly trying time, and one that highlights the work that still needs to be done.
Currently, migrant workers and refugees are in a precarious situation, with limited access to healthcare. Black and Indigenous communities are already disproportionately and economically disadvantaged, and will undoubtedly feel increased strain at this time. The Chinese and Asian communities are experiencing unprecedented xenophobia due to the pandemic.
As Islanders, we need to come together and make sure our racialized communities receive the proper care and support they need. Help your neighbours, donate to food banks if you can. Be a welcoming home to those who are under severe pressure and anxiety.
Educate those who rely on fear based information. Be kind in these trying times and let’s continue our work to eliminate racism.
