Joe Byrne, Federal Council Member with the New Democratic Party of Canada and Mike Redmond, Leader of the New Democratic Party of Prince Edward Island are urging Premier Robert Ghiz and Island Liberal Members of Parliament to help abolish the Canadian Senate. “Very serious ethical problems of former Conservative Senator Mike Duffy, former Liberal Senator Mac Harb and others are making it clearer that it is time for all Island politicians including the Premier and federal MPs to get behind efforts to abolish the Senate,” stated Byrne. Premier Robert Ghiz has never committed to abolishing the Senate. Instead he has suggested an intervention with the Supreme Court of Canada that stresses equal provincial representation. A major concern regarding Prince Edward Island’s role in Senate reform has been the constitutional provision that PEI having four Senate seats entitles the Island to four House of Commons seats. “Ghiz should get behind the Nova Scotia government seeking Senate abolishment. And he should focus on saving the Island seats in the House of Commons. Ghiz should put elected positions ahead of appointed ones,” Redmond added. In the House of Commons Official Opposition Ethics Critic and NDP MP Charlie Angus has demanded an independent investigation into the expenses file of Senator Duffy including the role of the Prime Minister’s Office. Media stories have included comments from Island MPs Sean Casey and Wayne Easter calling for the resignation for former Conservative Senator Mike Duffy. Premier Ghiz has declined comment on the specific issue of Senator Duffy’s status at this time. “So we see Liberal MPs criticizing a former Tory Senator, saying nothing about a former Liberal Senator whose expenses are also under scrutiny, and not uttering a peep about abolishing the Senate. Unless the Premier or some Liberal MPs state clear intentions on the Senate then we have to conclude that the Liberal Party is status quo on the issue of appointing Senators. This is undemocratic and unacceptable,” Byrne stated. In March of this year, the NDP Official Opposition in the House of Commons put forward a motion to abolish the Senate. The Conservatives and Liberals defeated the motion. “It is time to see if the Liberals are clearer on what Islanders want. Islanders will not tolerate so called representatives that they cannot elect or remove in a vote. If the Liberals are not getting that message now they will soon enough,” concluded Redmond.
Mike Redmond, Leader of the New Democratic Party of PEI, is demanding that the provincial government recall the Legislative Assembly to deal with the current crisis of prices offered fishers in the lobster industry. “With the imposition of the HST and the poorly planned changes to rural health care, the government appears to think the business of the people is over for the session after sitting for only 24 days. Ridiculously low wharf prices for Island lobster affect all of rural PEI,” Redmond said. “Nothing is more important right now than solving the crisis in this very important fishery.” The NDP PEI proposes that the Legislature reconvene and authorize the immediate creation of a legislative committee with the power of subpoena to bring all parties to the table for five days starting Wednesday May 15th. Fishers, buyers, and representatives of plant workers should be called together to solve the low wharf price problem that has been plaguing the entire industry for years and has now reached crisis proportions. “The provincial government can’t just shrug its shoulders and do nothing,” said the NDP PEI Leader. Under PEI’s Fisheries Act, the Minister of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development has the powers to encourage the maintenance and development of the resources of the fishery. These powers include actions relating to fish buying and processing if he or she considers it in the public interest to do so. “Government cannot simply stand by and watch when the livelihood of so many is at stake. The current government has imposed changes that negatively affect rural Islanders. Now it is time that the government and all political parties in the Legislature stand up for rural PEI. Recall the Legislature and do it now!” concluded Redmond. Contact: Mike Redmond Leader, NDP PEI 902-940-4459 michael.redmond@ndppei.ca -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Charlottetown, PE (May 6th, 2013) –NDP PEI Leader, Mike Redmond today announced that youth addictions will be the subject of the second in a series of policy forums sponsored by the NDP PEI. The forum will take place at Red’s Corner in Poole’s Corner on Tuesday, May 21st. The first forum, on watershed issues, was held in Cornwall in February and attracted both party members and non-members. “Youth substance abuse and addiction is a very serious issue that has gone under the radar for too long. It’s robbing many young people of a bright future and threatening our communities,” Mr. Redmond said. “I have been approached by many parents and others who are desperate for solutions. They know we need to reverse this destructive and growing trend,” continued Redmond. “We feel the kind of public discussion we are planning for May 21st is an important step in addressing the issues.” The forum on addictions will take place at Red’s Corner, in Poole’s Corner on Tuesday, May 21st at 7 p.m. The evening will start with a panel discussion to address some key questions: What are the social, personal, and economic factors that contribute to the problem? What are we doing now about the problem? What could be done to be more effective in response? The panel will include a parent, a counsellor, a crime prevention officer and researchers. By sharing their different perspectives, panelists will present a comprehensive overview of the issue, leading to an open discussion with those in attendance. The NDP is hoping that this discussion will lead to a more complete understanding of this issue, which will help as the party continues to develop health and social policy. A summary of the discussion will be made available after the forum, which is open to the public. “Shame, and denial about substance abuse and addictions in young people, however understandable, have allowed government to keep its head in the sand on this critical issue,” concluded Redmond, “Yet the greater shame is in not coming to grips with the problem and dealing with it. We owe it to our youth, their parents and our communities to respond with policies and programs that are developed through open public discussion.” Contact: Mike Redmond Leader, NDP PEI 902-940-4459 michael.redmond@ndppei.ca

NDP PEI Leader Mike Redmond has urged government to develop a long-term health care plan that includes a consultative development process with all Islanders. “The cost of our health care system is staggering. Consecutive Liberal and Conservative Governments have only planned and budgeted from election to election. It is no longer acceptable to govern in such a short-sighted way. We need to look at health care with a longer view. We need to ensure that the system is sustainable and that all Islanders have access to the care they need,” stated Redmond. Government statistics indicate that the health care budget has grown from $360 million to $570 million in the past five years. “The federal government is decreasing transfer payments. Premier Ghiz and Minister Currie seem inactive on the social determinants of health. If these trends continue, the health care budget on Prince Edward Island could easily balloon to over $1 billion dollars annually,” explained the NDP Leader. The province is facing major issues in terms of the social determinants of health. One in four children lives in poverty and 17,000 Islanders live below the poverty line. “This Liberal Government has no affordable housing strategy, an ineffective approach to addictions, and very poor preventative health measures. Like previous governments, the Ghiz government can’t see past the next election and is trapped in short-term thinking,” stated Redmond. Ottawa’s reduction in health care transfer payments means that PEI only receives 19 cents on the dollar from the Harper Government. “We need a Premier that has the courage to stand up to the Federal Government and Stephen Harper to say that this is completely unacceptable. This country was built on a Medicare system introduced by Tommy Douglas, the founder of the modern NDP. The original funding formula was a 50/50 split between the federal government and the provinces. Our current Prime Minister has obviously forgotten this,” stated the NDP Leader. An NDP government would develop a comprehensive long-term plan that details all health care costs, including health administration and fees paid to Island EMS. “We will work to ensure adequate transfer payments from the federal government so that PEI can have a sustainable health care system. A long-term health care plan will put us in a better position to negotiate with the federal government, concluded Redmond.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Charlottetown, PE (April 29, 2013) – Mike Redmond, Leader of the New Democratic Party of Prince Edward Island, is expressing concern that the Progressive Conservative Official Opposition in the PEI Legislative Assembly is not asking questions about the sudden departure of Melissa MacEachern from her position as Deputy Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning. “The work of this particular deputy minister has come under scrutiny in Auditor General Reports for both 2012 and 2013. The Opposition should be asking for an explanation of her sudden departure and performance reports on her various areas of responsibility,” said Redmond. The 2013 Auditor General’s Report had numerous observations and recommendations regarding Skills PEI which manages over $30 million annually in federally sourced training funds and falls under the responsibility of the Department of Innovation and Advanced Learning. Former Auditor General Colin Younker critically reviewed contract management of professional services with Tourism PEI for the period from 2009 to 2011 when Ms. MacEachern was serving there as Deputy Minister. “It was announced three weeks ago that after six years Ms. MacEachern would be leaving her employment with the provincial government. It was very sudden. The Ghiz government has not even had time to formally name a new Deputy Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning,” the NDP Leader stated. On April 8, the provincial government indicated that Ms. MacEachern would be leaving her post on April 19 and returning to work at UPEI where she had previously been employed. The provincial cabinet formally rescinded Ms. MacEachern’s appointment as Deputy Minister as of April 20. Finance PEI Chief Executive Officer, Neil Stewart has been put in place as Acting Deputy Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning. “The government should be explaining what has happened here and reassuring Islanders that measures have been taken to address issues arising from Ms. MacEachern’s work. Besides the discussions in Auditor General Reports, we have other issues riddled with unanswered questions from her most recent position such as the Testori deal, the Holman Grand debacle, and a PNP report mentioned in the media but not formally published. These are matters involving many millions of dollars. Since the government is not offering this information, the Opposition PCs should be pushing for it. The bottom line is that there has to be accountability for mistakes made”, concluded Redmond. Contact: Mike Redmond Leader, NDP PEI 902-940-4459 michael.redmond@ndppei.ca

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Charlottetown, PE (April 25, 2013) – Mike Redmond, Leader of the New Democratic Party of Prince Edward Island, is saying that the Ghiz Government’s failure to help low income Islanders is due to its record of financial mismanagement. “Back in January, the NDP expressed concern that the government’s financial mismanagement was jeopardizing its Social Action Plan announced last year,” stated Redmond. On January 27, 2013, NDP Leader Redmond issued a press release expressing concern about the Social Action Plan in light of Finance Minister Sheridan’s statements about delaying balanced budget targets until 2016. Announced in May 2012, the Social Action Plan listed ways to address income inequality and poverty. “It is now clear we were right about low income people getting the short end of the stick,” said the NDP Leader. Meanwhile, government has blown millions on failed pet projects such as the Holman Grand Hotel, Plan B and their various gambling ventures.” Yesterday, Community Services and Seniors Minister, Valerie Docherty admitted that government increases to social assistance were not enough to keep up with the cost of living. The food allowance for a single adult has gone up from $156 to $163.80 a month, an extra $7.80. “That is not enough for people to live on let alone get healthier and more productive. It is a true shame how the Ghiz government has such messed up priorities,” concluded Redmond. Contact: Mike Redmond Leader, NDP PEI 902-940-4459 michael.redmond@ndppei.ca -30-

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Charlottetown, PE (April 23, 2013) – Tyler Murnaghan, Interim Chair of the New Democratic Youth of PEI, believes the Liberal Party of PEI needs to apologize for blatantly ignoring the law by allowing minors to drink at their events. Two Young Liberals told media that they were exposed to some uncomfortable situations of underage drinking while attending Liberal Party of PEI events. “At a time when drinking and other substance abuse are so rampant among our youth, where is the leadership from the Liberal Party in enforcing the law?” Murnaghan went on to state that all NDP PEI events where alcohol is served include responsible beverage service with ID required. The NDP is asking for the Liberals to apologize for their lapse of judgement and implement policy to ensure that youth can safely attend their events. “This is blatant disregard for the law as well as just plain irresponsible,” stated NDP PEI Leader, Mike Redmond. Despite requests to the Liberal Party President, the Executive Direction and the youth executive, The Liberal Party of PEI has refused to comment on this issue. “The Liberals must stand up, be accountable and commit to responsible service of alcohol at all future events,” concluded Murnaghan.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Charlottetown, PE (April 9, 2013) – Mike Redmond, Leader of the New Democratic Party of Prince Edward Island, believes Premier Robert Ghiz should provide the Island public with a report on the performance of Deputy Minister Melissa MacEachern. The Government of Prince Edward Island released a statement Monday that after almost six years with the Ghiz government, Melissa MacEachern, Deputy Minister of Innovation and Advanced Learning and former Deputy Minister of Tourism is returning to work at UPEI on April 19th. “This is happening really quickly and the Premier should explain what is going on here,” stated Redmond. NDP Leader Mike Redmond issued a press release concerning the work of Deputy Minister MacEachern on March 26th. “We called for the Premier to let Deputy Minister MacEachern go a couple of weeks ago,” continued Redmond, “The Auditor General’s Report suggests sloppy management of Skills PEI. As the Harper government seeks re-negotiation of labour market development agreements, the track record of mismanagement in Skills PEI may have put federally sourced training funds in jeopardy.” Former Auditor General Colin Younker reviewed contract management of professional services with Tourism PEI for the period from 2009 to 2011 when Ms. MacEachern was serving there as Deputy Minister. The Auditor General found a lack of controls and oversight with these contracts. Seventeen out of 31 contractual arrangements had deficiencies in contract terms. Of the 17, 12 did not have terms documented at all. “We know there were issues when MacEachern was Deputy Minister of Tourism. As Deputy Minister for Innovation and Advanced Learning, she was responsible for hundreds of millions of dollars in program funds. The Premier should do a review of her work and issue a performance report on her six years in government. Islanders deserve to know what happened here,” concluded the NDP Leader.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Charlottetown, PE (April 22, 2013) – Mike Redmond, the Leader of the New Democratic Party of Prince Edward Island, is condemning today’s remarks by Minister of Education and Early Childhood, Alan McIsaac on the English Language School Board. “Allowing un-elected, appointed officials to decide whether they themselves should be elected or appointed is just ridiculous,” says Redmond. In a press release dated February 4, 2013, the NDP PEI leader indicated that removing the right to vote and appointing trustees is a very short-sighted solution. “Minister McIsaac is showing a serious lack of leadership,” continued Redmond, “He has indicated that he will not provide any advice to the newly appointed trustees of the English Language School Board on the voting issue. Our Minister of Education and Early Childhood should be providing some directions to the trustees. Isn’t that his job?” The Education Governance Commission recommended that Eastern and Western School Boards be maintained and that Board Trustees be elected. The government ignored these recommendations when it chose to amalgamate two of the province’s school boards and to appoint the new Board’s trustees. At the time, the P.E.I. Home and School Federation expressed a preference for elected Trustees. Voter turnout for School Boards elections has been very poor in recent years. “This Minister needs to read over the report his government commissioned and learn how to take good advice. Right now, he looks like he is making it up as he goes along”, concluded Redmond. Contact: Mike Redmond Leader, NDP PEI 902-940-4459 michael.redmond@ndppei.ca

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Charlottetown, PE (April 19, 2013) – Mike Redmond, Leader of the New Democratic Party of Prince Edward Island is urging the Ghiz Government to get its act together in the management of health care. “The Ghiz Government has been in power for six years. They have produced six budgets. And they are no further ahead on health care today than they were six years ago,” said Redmond. Health Minister, Doug Currie, announced changes to rural health care in March. The planned changes affect services at hospitals in Souris, Alberton, O’Leary and Tyne Valley. “After attending community meetings on these changes, I can clearly see the weaknesses in not having a clear plan for change,” continued Redmond. “Doug Currie has no, I repeat, no plan that people can actually read. He has no effective way of reassuring people in affected communities or people in the Charlottetown and Summerside areas that city hospitals will not be overwhelmed,” the NDP Leader said. Reports indicate that wait times for many health procedures are among the worst in the country. PEI is the only province that lacks a clear strategy for a catastrophic drug plan. The Ghiz Government is also being criticized for a lack of action for addiction treatment, mental health services, and the increasing devastation of cancer on Prince Edward Islanders. “Why should Islanders – both rural and urban – have any confidence in unclear plans of this government on health care? They have accomplished almost nothing on health care in over six years,” concluded Redmond. “Why should we believe anything Robert Ghiz or Doug Currie says now?” Contact: Mike Redmond Leader, NDP PEI 902-940-4459 michael.redmond@ndppei.ca -30-
