New Democrats on Prince Edward Island will mark the first anniversary of Jack Layton’s death on August 22nd. “Jack’s message of ‘love, hope and optimism’ speaks to the needs of Islanders, now more than ever.” stated Andrew Want, President of the NDP of PEI
Young Islanders are taking a more active lead in the NDP PEI taking inspiration from Jack’s final words – “As my time in political life draws to a close I want to share with you my belief in your power to change this country and this world.”
At the NDP PEI Leadership Convention on October 13th a special announcement will be made detailing an annual Jack Layton Memorial Award.
“The award will be presented at the NDP PEI annual conventions and will reflect the spirit and hard work that Jack was renowned for.” said Mr. Want
Joe Byrne, Federal NDP executive member for the Atlantic region, said of the award: “Jack’s legacy ensures that those who have been marginalized for so long have a right to be heard. Layton personified the values that make us a better people and better communities. These are the principles that should form the framework of this country.”
Details of the criteria for the annual Jack Layton Memorial Award will be made in the presence of Jack Layton’s friend and successor, Tom Mulcair. The leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, Mr. Mulcair will be the keynote speaker at the NDP PEI Leadership Dinner to take place at the Delta Prince Edward after the convention.
